Limit Inbreeding

To place a limit on inbreeding, please follow the steps below:

Limit Progeny Inbreeding

  1. Check the Set a progeny inbreeding limit option and select the Custom Limit (Click Histogram) list item.
  2. Click on the histogram at the point you want to set the inbreeding limit
  3. Click the Update Target button.

MateSel will then add this target to the objective function and begin searching for new mating solutions that satisfy your chosen limit. It may take some time for updated solutions to appear on the Progeny Inbreeding Histogram.

It is recommended that you start with a “Moderate” emphasis and experiment from there. For example, if you find there are still matings above your set limit, this might be because of a few reasons:

  • MateSel needs more time to converge on a solution
  • You need to increase your “Limit Emphasis” (and hit “Update Target”) to tell the algorithm to move more quickly in this direction.
  • You might have set other targets (e.g. trait/marker/etc) that have an Emphasis greater than your chosen Limit Emphasis so the algorithm is favouring solutions for those targets rather than your Inbreeding Limit target.
  • Your candidate resources simply don’t allow a solution where all matings are below your limit
